Indianapolis, Indiana – The fire department stated Tuesday that “NaloxBoxes” are now located at the entrances of all Wayne Township fire stations as well as the Mount Jackson Cemetery.
A “NaloxBox” is an overdose-response kit for opioids that contains Naloxone.
The overdose reversal drug naloxone, sometimes known as Narcan, can be administered intramuscularly, subcutaneously, or via injection. The effects of opioid drugs, such as heroin, morphine, and oxycodone, can reportedly be temporarily reversed, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdose deaths from drugs claimed more than 70,000 lives in the United States in 2022. In Indiana, overdose deaths claimed 2,811 lives in 2021.
“Wayne Township believes that the Opioid Rescue Box has the potential to save lives and help
combat the opioid epidemic by providing access to naloxone,” the fire department said in a Tuesday release. “We hope to empower individuals and families to take action against overdose and prevent needless deaths.”
The boxes are financed by the state’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction.
