EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A woman was arrested Sunday afternoon after she crashed her motorcycle, fled the scene, and later admitted to drinking before the incident, according to the Evansville Police Department (EPD).
Officers responded to the crash scene at the intersection of Weinbach Avenue and Kathleen Avenue around 2 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a wrecked motorcycle but no rider at the scene. Authorities say the motorcyclist had fled before officers arrived.
While canvassing the area, EPD officers located Laura Willis and took her into custody. Willis reportedly told police that she had consumed two mixed drinks at a local bar about an hour prior to the crash. She claimed that while riding to a friend’s house, she swerved to avoid a vehicle that had braked suddenly in front of her, causing her to lose control and crash.
Officers noted that Willis smelled strongly of alcohol, but due to her injuries, they were unable to conduct field sobriety tests. She also refused to submit to a chemical test when asked, which could further complicate the legal proceedings. After being evaluated at the hospital, Willis was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Willis now faces several charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), leaving the scene of an accident, and refusing to submit to a chemical test. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving, particularly on motorcycles.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to assess the situation and determine the next steps.
