Evansville, IN – Two dogs were found in a distressed state inside an abandoned home on Judson Street, prompting an investigation by local authorities on Friday. The Evansville Police Department responded to a call from Evansville Animal Care & Control after a puppy was seen hanging from a broken window, raising concerns about the dog’s safety.
Officials from Animal Care & Control had reported concerns that the puppy might get injured from the shattered glass. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers discovered signs that the home had been vacant for several days. Evidence indicated that the property’s owner had not been home for some time, leaving the dogs without necessary care.
Upon entering the house, officers found multiple jugs of water, which the dogs had chewed on, and a nearly empty bag of dog food. Feces were scattered throughout the home, and the dogs appeared to have no access to clean water or heat. One of the dogs was visibly malnourished, with ribs showing and feces in its fur.
Animal Care & Control responded promptly to the scene and took both dogs into custody. The officers noted that, despite a previous interaction on January 9, when an officer had responded to a theft report at the property, the puppy did not appear emaciated at that time. However, the property owner had refused to allow police entry during that earlier visit.
No arrests have been made, and the identity of the property owner remains undisclosed. Authorities continue to investigate the situation. The condition of the two pit bulls remains unclear, and Animal Care & Control has not provided an update on their health or recovery.
