EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A local mother was arrested and charged with neglect after authorities say she left her infant home alone on Monday.
Officers were called to an apartment complex on Cass Court after a report was made about a young child being found alone in one of the units. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a maintenance worker holding the infant.
The maintenance worker told police that the child was found alone when the employee entered the apartment to allow pest control to conduct a scheduled treatment.
While authorities were on the scene, the infant’s mother, identified as 29-year-old Whitney Britton, returned home. She was promptly taken into custody by Evansville Police Department (EPD) officers.
Britton allegedly told officers she had left her child at home while she went to retrieve her vehicle, which had been repossessed. She explained that she had no car seat to secure her infant and left the child alone as a result.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Department of Child Services (DCS) took custody of the infant. Britton was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of neglect of a dependent.
This case has raised concerns about the safety of young children left unattended in potentially dangerous situations. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
