EVANSVILLE, Ind. – An early morning fight at the Corner Pocket Bar on North Fulton Street led to gunfire and the arrest of a Jeffersonville man early Sunday.
Around 2:30 a.m., a dispute broke out inside the bar, involving between 10 and 12 individuals. An off-duty Evansville police officer, who was working at the bar, intervened and escorted some of the parties outside in an effort to defuse the situation.
Once outside, the argument continued, and moments later, the officer heard several shots fired from the parking lot. The officer observed 43-year-old Darius Wells of Jeffersonville fleeing the area while clutching something inside his hoodie.
The officer immediately stopped Wells and attempted to perform a pat-down. However, authorities say Wells became increasingly hostile, threatening the officer in the process.
As more officers arrived on the scene, Wells continued to resist arrest, reportedly striking one officer in the face. After a brief struggle, police were able to subdue Wells. During the arrest, authorities discovered marijuana and a straw that tested positive for cocaine on his person.
Wells was transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail, where he faces multiple charges, including battery, resisting law enforcement, intimidation, and possession of controlled substances.
At this time, authorities have not reported any injuries related to the gunfire or the altercation. The investigation is ongoing.
