Evansville, Ind. — A local man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase early Tuesday morning. Authorities say 22-year-old Aviea Joyner was driving erratically on Highway 41 near Columbia Street just after 1:30 a.m., swerving and driving off the road several times.
Evansville Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but Joyner fled the scene, accelerating to speeds exceeding 65 mph as he headed down Morgan Avenue. The pursuit continued onto Aviation Avenue, where Joyner nearly struck a parked car before veering into a rock alley.
Police reported that Joyner then jumped out of the moving vehicle, which crashed into a fence. Officers pursued Joyner on foot, heading back toward Morgan Avenue, but they lost track of him during the search.
Inside the vehicle, police discovered three passengers, including two juveniles. Despite the initial setback in the foot pursuit, authorities were able to locate Joyner later in the 1600 block of East Morgan Avenue. He was arrested without further incident.
Joyner was transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail, where he faces several charges, including Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, Possession of Marijuana, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and fleeing from law enforcement, particularly when minors are involved. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may be released as the case progresses.
