EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Evansville man is facing multiple charges after an incident in which he allegedly punched a woman and ran over her while she was holding a child.
Steven Roach, 35, is accused of assaulting the woman on Saturday before fleeing the scene. According to the Evansville Police Department, Roach made a 911 call during the altercation, stating that he had punched the woman because she refused to leave his car. However, the situation escalated when a second 911 call came in from the victim herself. She reported that Roach had not only punched her but had also run her over with his vehicle and left the scene.
When officers arrived at the location, they found the victim visibly distressed, crying, and holding a child. Authorities said she had road rash on both knees and a severely swollen ankle with visible blood. Despite the traumatic nature of the incident, the child was unharmed.
The victim told officers that she had been in a conversation with Roach inside his vehicle when he suddenly punched her. She stated that after being struck, she was pushed out of the car, and Roach proceeded to run over her leg while she was still holding the child.
The police immediately began searching for Roach but were unable to locate him at the scene. However, on Wednesday morning, Roach was apprehended and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Roach now faces several charges, including battery, neglect, and criminal recklessness. The charges highlight the severity of the incident, which could have resulted in even more serious harm to the victim and the child.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
