Evansville, Indiana – Mayor Stephanie Terry has announced the city’s participation in the Move with the Mayor® Spring Mental Health and Physical Activity Challenge, a national initiative aimed at promoting physical movement and social connection to enhance both mental and physical health. The program, which launched on Thursday, May 1, aligns with Mental Health Awareness Month and runs throughout the month of May.
In collaboration with the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, the initiative encourages residents to engage in various physical activities such as walking, biking, meditation, and yoga. The primary goal of the challenge is to improve mental well-being, combat social isolation, and foster stronger community bonds.
“When we move together, we grow together—not just physically, but emotionally and as a community,” Mayor Terry said, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in the wellness process.
Throughout May, Evansville residents are encouraged to track their progress and share their activities on social media using the hashtag #MoveWithTheMayor. This social media engagement aims to inspire others to join the challenge and create a shared sense of accomplishment.
In addition to the online campaign, Mayor Terry will host weekly walking events every Monday, offering an opportunity for residents to come together and stay active. Other activities such as line dancing and stretching sessions will also be available to promote physical fitness in a fun, social environment.
The initiative extends beyond just physical activities. The Mayor’s office is actively participating in community events, including the Traveling City Hall at the Sunrise Pump Station on Wednesday, May 14th. Evansville’s Mayor’s Free Day at City Pools—a date to be announced—will also allow residents to enjoy the city’s public pools at no charge. Additionally, on Saturday, May 31st, the Block by Block Neighborhood Cleanup will take place in the Tepe Park Neighborhood, encouraging residents to volunteer in improving their local environment while building connections within their community.
The Move with the Mayor® Challenge reflects a broader effort to promote healthy lifestyles in Evansville, not only through physical activity but also by fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among the city’s residents.
