Knox County, Indiana – Indiana State Police are urging drivers to heed flood warnings and avoid ignoring posted road closures after three water rescues were conducted Tuesday along State Road 58, near the Knox/Daviess County line.
The Indiana State Police reported that, despite road closure signs clearly marking the danger, all three drivers involved in the rescues drove around the barricades, continuing down the flooded roadway. This reckless behavior led to the drivers becoming stranded in rising waters.
Troopers responded swiftly to the scene, rescuing the stranded motorists. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, each driver was cited for disobeying traffic signs, which is considered a violation, particularly in hazardous conditions like flooding.
The State Police emphasized the importance of following road closure warnings during severe weather events, reminding the public that such actions not only endanger the individuals involved but also put first responders at risk.
“Turn around, don’t drown” is the critical message law enforcement is reinforcing, urging drivers to avoid driving through flooded areas at all costs.
