Peru, Indiana – According to a press statement from the Indiana State Police, eight agencies in north-central Indiana joined forces for three days to police traffic regulations and stop the flow of illegal drugs. The surprise patrol’s name was “Operation Blue Wave.”
Officers made 54 arrests between June 20 and June 22 on 174 largely drug-related offenses, 27 of which were felonies. Additionally, police issued 215 written warnings and 60 driving penalties. There was also one arrest for driving while intoxicated.
Officers found cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana food, MDMA, THC oil, ketamine, prescription drugs, and drug paraphernalia during Operation Blue Wave.
“This is the eleventh year we have organized a summer driving season kickoff patrol,” said Indiana State Police, Sergeant Andrew Smith, who managed the patrol.
The choice of U.S. Route 31 was based on the volume of traffic it sees. According to their press release, officers wanted to “serve notice that as the summer temperatures increase, so will their vigilance in preventing illegal narcotics from reaching Hoosier communities.”
The operation was carried out by deputies from the Kokomo Police Department, Logansport Police Department, Galveston Police Department, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, and marked and unmarked police cars.
